Ohlone College head coach Jeremy Penaflor begins his 12th season with the Renegades volleyball program. Since being hired, Ohlone Volleyball has seen steady improvement in both classroom and on-the-court performance as well as an overall program improvement with the establishment of instructional youth programs like boys and girls club teams, youth leagues, skill clinics, and summer camps. Penaflor and the Renegades Volleyball program most recently experienced a taste of success during the 2018 season breaking the 20 win threshold for the first time in program history (21 regular season wins), tallying a program high of 22 wins overall in a season, a playoff berth for only the second time in over 20 years, and a playoff win for the first time in recent program history. The program also saw success during the 2015 season tallying a record of 19-6, and during the 2012 season finishing with a record of 19-5 and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in over 12 years. Players have consistently appeared as statistical leaders in the state in their respective positions, and a vast majority of players have transferred on to the institutions of their choice based on academics, athletics, or both.
Penaflor brings over 18 years of coaching experience to the Renegades Volleyball Program. Coming from a long range of comprehensive fundamental training, Penaflor requires his athletes to have the same attention to detail both on and off the court. He expects the members of his teams to be the complete student athletes with successful performances in the classroom and positive, hardworking attitudes on the floor.
Prior to joining the Renegades, Penaflor spent four years as a member of the San Jose State University volleyball coaching staff (2002-06) as an assistant coach. His primary areas of focus at San Jose State were setter development, libero and defensive specialists’ development, statistical analysis of individual and team play, and coordination of video analysis and exchange. Penaflor also has an extensive juniors and club volleyball background. In his career as a club coach Penaflor has had multiple top 10 finishes in different age divisions of the Northern California Volleyball Association. His national experience includes four appearances to the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships, the most recent being in 2015 when he last coached a club team. Penaflor also brings his experiences as a USA Volleyball High Performance Tryout court coach/evaluator, Stanford Volleyball Camps coach, and coaching experiences from a number of different high schools and middle schools around the San Francisco bay area.
Penaflor has a Bachelors in Science degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Management from San Jose State University and a Masters Degree in Sports Management from California University of Pennsylvania. He was member of the San Jose State men’s club volleyball team. As a player he was named to the All-NCCVL (Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League) First Team (2002, 2004). At the NIRSA National Championship Tournament he was selected All-Tournament Libero during two tournament appearances (2002, 2003). Penaflor, married in March of 2011, currently resides in Concord with his wife Sarah, daughter Lilly (7yrs old), and youngest daughter Vivian (3yrs old). They have a cat named Kitty, and the family loves being home when volleyball is not happening.
